U-Abo Freizeit

U-Abo Freizeit

The new ‘U-Abo Freizeit’ for when your time is your own

For a one-year trial period, the TNW is making an exciting addition to its range of subscription offers. Designed with the leisure-traveller in mind, the new U-Abo Freizeit will have the same tri-national travel validity as the existing U-Abo Subscription, and can be used from Monday to Friday after 7 p.m. and all day on weekends. The geographical range covers the TNW area, the BVB cross-border tram routes, as well as zones 1-3 of the RVL and the DistriBus network in Germany and France respectively. A 3-month subscription costs CHF 90 – that’s just CHF 30 a month!

On Monday to Friday, journeys must start at 7.00 p.m. or later. If a journey begins before then, you will need a separate, valid ticket to cover the point of departure to a stop scheduled to depart at 7.00 p.m. or later. What’s more, the U-Abo Freizeit is valid all day from Friday, from 7.00 p.m. right through to the end of operation on Sunday, including the night network. The all-day validity applies on Saturdays and Sundays only. To avoid misunderstandings, the U-Abo Freizeit is not valid on any cantonal or country-specific public holidays on Monday to Friday.

The U-Abo Freizeit is only available as a 3-month subscription. This allows us to offer it at such an unbeatably attractive price.

You can find more information in the brochure on the U-Abo Freizeit (in German).

U-Abo Freizeit - description

Territorial range: The U-Abo Freizeit has the same geographical validity as the normal U-Abo Subscription. It can therefore be used throughout the entire TNW area (including the cross-border tram lines), in zones 1-3 of the RVL in nearby Germany and on the DistriBus network in France.

Period of validity: The U-Abo Freizeit is valid from Monday to Friday from 7 p.m. until the end of operation and all day on Saturday and Sunday (until the end of operation), including the night network. If public holidays fall in the period from Monday to Friday, the U-Abo Freizeit is valid on normal weekdays from 7.00 pm.

Prices: The U-Abo Freizeit is available as a 3-month package for CHF 90 – a monthly cost of only CHF 30. For persons with residence and tax domicile outside the TNW area, the price is CHF 165.

Availability: The U-Abo Freizeit can be purchased at BVB, BLT and SBB sales points, at u-abo.ch and with the SwissPass at SBB ticket machines and via sbb.ch.

Questions and answers (Q&A)

Q: The season ticket is valid from 7 p.m. - does this mean the time when I board the public transport or when I get off?
A: You can only use the subscription on journeys scheduled to start at 7.00 p.m. or later. For a journey starting earlier than 7.00 p.m., a separate, valid ticket is needed to cover the distance from the point of departure to a stop further along your journey where the scheduled departure time is 7.00 p.m. or later.

Q: How long is the U-Abo Freizeit valid for at night?
A: The U-Abo Freizeit is valid from 7 p.m. until the end of the day’s services.

Q: Why is the U-Abo Freizeit only valid from 19.00 and not from 18.00?
A: The timing has been chosen so that the travelcard is valid after the evening peak period, which lasts from about 5.00 p.m. until about 7.00 p.m.

Q: I would like to use the U-Abo Freizeit primarily in the late evening and on the TNW night services. Is this possible?
A: Yes, the U-Abo Freizeit is valid from 7 p.m. on the entire TNW network and also on the night network on Friday/Saturday and Saturday/Sunday nights until the end of service in the early morning. There is no surcharge to use the night network.

Q: Is the U-Abo Freizeit also valid all day on public holidays?
A: The all-day validity only applies on Saturdays and Sundays. Public holidays that fall between Monday and Friday are not covered, and on those days, the U-Abo Freizeit is only valid from 7.00 p.m. onwards. To avoid misunderstandings, cantonal or country-specific public holidays cannot, unfortunately, be taken into account.

Q: Can I travel with the U-Abo Freizeit to e.g. Lörrach in Germany or Saint-Louis in France?
A: The U-Abo Freizeit has the same geographical validity as the normal U-Abo Subscription. In other words, it can be used from Monday to Friday from 7 p.m. and all day on weekends in zones 1-3 of the RVL in Germany as well as on the DistriBus network in France.

Q: The U-Abo Freizeit is sold with a three-month validity - can I buy the subscription for 1 month?
A: It is currently not possible to buy a subscription for one month. The creation of this 3-month validity period allows us to offer a very attractive price during the trial phase.

Q: Where can I buy the U-Abo Freizeit?
A: The subscription is available digitally via the website u-abo.ch or via sbb.ch. You can also buy it at sales points at Barfüsserplatz (BVB), BLT Heuwaage or in Oberwil, at staffed SBB counters or at SBB ticket machines if you have a SwissPass. For technical reasons, it is currently not possible to purchase a U-Abo Freizeit via the U-Abo app. However, after purchase, the subscription can be displayed on the U-Abo app.

Q: Can the U-Abo voucher portal be used with the U-Abo Freizeit?
A: Yes. Customers must set up a personal login for this at u-abo.ch and can then access the U-Abo voucher offer.

Q: Is there a reduced fare for holders of a Half Fare Travelcard and/or for young people or senior citizens?
A: Due to the low price of the U-Abo Freizeit, there is a uniform price with no further discounts.

Q: Can the U-Abo Freizeit be exchanged for a U-Abo Subscription?
A: To cater for people’s changing mobility needs, the U-Abo Freizeit can be exchanged for a standard U-Abo Subscription at any time. The proportional residual value of the U-Abo Freizeit will be credited to the U-Abo. For technical reasons, exchanges are only possible at staffed sale points.

Q: Why is the TNW carrying out a market test with a Freizeit travelcard and not with a general Flexi travelcard?
A: A market test with a Flexi season ticket is being carried out in two other transport associations in western Switzerland. The TNW U-Abo Subscription – valid throughout the entire region – is a special case in the Swiss transport landscape. Also bear in mind that a U-Abo Subscription makes economic sense when used on as few as three days per week for adults. It is even more advantageous for young people and senior citizens, and/or for journeys of more than one zone or if multiple journeys are made daily. A flexi-ticket with validity, for example, of three days a week, would not be a sensible addition to the U-ticket. The U-Abo Freizeit will be tested as a supplement to the standard U-Abo Subscription.
