triregio Single Tickets

From every location within the TNW towards every location within the RVL (Germany) with one ticket

The two transport associations Tarifverbund Nordwestschweiz (TNW) and Regio Verkehrsverbund Lörrach (RVL) offer an independent cross-border triregio tariff. A single ticket can be purchased from any location in the TNW to any location in the RVL and vice versa.

There are 5 tickets categories:
- single tickets for adults
- single tickets for adults 1st class
- single tickets for adults (reduced in combination with Swiss Half Fare Travelcard)
- single tickets for adults 1st class (reduced in combination with Swiss Half Fare Travelcard)
- single tickets for children

All combinations of up to 3 RVL price levels (zones) with up to 8 TNW price levels (zones) are possible, whereby cross-border single tickets must include at least 1 TNW zone and at least 1 RVL zone.

Tariff setting:
The tariff is calculated based on the number of zones required in the TNW and the number of zones required in the RVL. At the ticket machine, you can enter your destination under ‘Cross-border tickets to Germany’ and the ticket with the tariff will then be displayed. You can find more information in a quick quick guide for destination selection (available in German). Alternatively, you can press the blue information button (to the left of the Germany sign), which will bring up a map showing the locations. Pressing the map will automatically determine and display the ticket.

You can find the zone and route network map in the timetable & routes.

Half Fare Travelcard:
The Swiss Half Fare Travelcard entitles you to purchase discounted triregio single tickets in both directions.

Multi-use Tickets:
Triregio single tickets can be purchased from ticket machines, via the BLT app ‘Tickets’ or from some bus drivers. Triregio multi-use tickets, on the other hand, are only available as mobile tickets. Triregio multi-use tickets are sold in the TNW via the ‘Tickets’ app. More information can be found here.

Age limits for children:
For journeys from the TNW to the RVL area, children aged 6 to 16 (15.99 years) pay the reduced price (child fare).
For journeys from the RVL area to the TNW area, children aged 6 to 15 (14.99 years) pay the reduced price (child fare).

Bicycles:
A triregio single ticket for adults must be purchased for cross-border bicycle transport. Please note the conditions of the transport companies (in Germany, there are sometimes time restrictions for taking along the bicycle depending on the transport company).

Groups:
A triregio group ticket is available at a discount based on the triregio single ticket price. The triregio group ticket can be purchased for single or return journeys. As there are a large number of possible combinations of different tickets, the group ticket can only be purchased at BVB and BLT sales outlets.

For more information such as further offers, please refer to the or the triregio Homepage (German) or the triregio brochure (available in German).

All tariff details for triregio single tickets can be found in the tariff regulations for triregio single tickets (available in German).

Questions and Answers

Question: What information do I need to purchase a ticket?
Answer: I need to know the name of the town I want to travel to. The system takes care of the rest. I enter my destination at the ticket machine at my point of departure. For cross-border offers, I first select whether I need an adult, half fare or child ticket for Germany. Then I enter my destination using the destination selection and the ticket is displayed.

Question: I have forgotten the name of my destination or do not want to enter it as text.
Answer: At the ticket machine, you can press the blue information button for cross-border services. The map will then appear. Press the zone number on the map to display a detailed map of your destination. Press ‘Buy ticket’ to display the ticket and select the ticket type (adult, half fare, etc.).

Question: In the TNW, the reduced tariff applies to children and Half Fare Travelcard holders. What applies to the triregio single ticket?
Answer: As different age limits apply in the TNW and RVL due to national regulations, adults with a Half Fare Travelcards (reduced) are subject to a different tariff than children.

Question: There is now a tariff with a Half Fare Travelcard for triregio single tickets. Can I also purchase this for the return journey?
Answer: The tariff with a Half Fare Travelcard (reduced) can be purchased for the return journey both at the TNW departure point and in the RVL (Germany) and is only valid for triregio single tickets.

Question: I live just across the border. Can I also buy a triregio short distance ticket?
Answer: Only triregio single tickets are available. It is not possible to combine short distances in one country with normal tickets in  the other country. However, there is now the option of the reduced tariff in conjunction with the Swiss Half Fare Travelcard for both directions of travel.

Question: How is the tariff for the return journey calculated?
Answer: The tariff for triregio single tickets is generally the same for both the outward and return journeys. However, the tariff is displayed in the local currency and is calculated using a fixed exchange rate. For example, the journey from TNW Zone 10 to Lörrach costs CHF 4.80 for adults without a Half Fare Travelcard for the outward journey and EUR 4.60 for the return journey.

Question: I would like to pay for my return journey in Swiss francs (CHF) at a ticket machine in Germany, but I am being charged a different tariff in CHF than for the journey from Switzerland to Germany. How is the tariff for the return journey calculated?
Answer: The tariff is always in the local currency. When paying in CHF in Germany, the tariff valid in Germany in EUR is converted into CHF at an exchange rate that is standard for public transport. This rate is adjusted regularly. This is why it differs from the fixed exchange rate used to determine the triregio tariffs in CHF and EUR for TNW and RVL. As a result, the journey from Basel to Lörrach may cost CHF 4.80 and the return journey from Lörrach to Basel may not cost exactly CHF 4.80, because the EUR 4.60 is converted at a different CHF exchange rate at the ticket machine.

Question: I am a loyal public transport customer and have a GA travelcard. How can I benefit from these triregio single tickets?
Answer: GA travelcard holders should continue to choose connecting tickets. These can be purchased from ticket machines for cross-border services under ‘U-Abo Adults’ or ‘U-Abo Youth’. Please note the different age limits in the RVL.

How do I select a triregio single ticket at the TNW ticket machine?
